Story

What do the four seasons look like through the eyes of fashion? I divided this painting into four equal canvases — Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter — each with its own color world. Into each I wove prints from Lilia Poustovit's 2017 collection as decorative fabric elements, and layered in architectural details from both the old and new city of Kyiv. Fashion, I think, is what makes a city alive — it's the color that people bring to the streets. This work was created for ELLE magazine's FASHION+ART project, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Ukrainian Fashion Week. Twenty leading Ukrainian designers and twenty artists were paired together to create twenty artworks. All were exhibited at the Mystetskyi Arsenal in Kyiv during Ukrainian Fashion Week, September 4–9, 2017.

Artistry

I primed the canvas with a black ground and a black imprimatura. For the architectural elements, I used texture paste to build genuine volume into the surface, then applied a layer of oil paint over this foundation. The challenge — and the pleasure — was in bringing these four separate panels together into one unified work. The painting has not been varnished.
