Story

I painted this as a miniature companion to my large Leisurely — a personal experiment to see what the same composition feels like at just 5"×7". The answer surprised me: where the large canvas commands space and draws you in, this one is intimate and quietly charming. It's fascinating how size alone can shift a painting's entire emotional register. Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center, TX in 2020, “Walk Through The Grotto” from the arid savanna through a limestone crevice down a 100 foot staircase into a sheltered canyon of lush plant life. A place where time seems to stand still. But if you look closely, time runs very slowly, in its own rhythm and harmony. Plants grow on their own terms, and you can see what the World would be like, where man did not touch nature.

Artistry

I painted this on a black background — the white canvas was first coated with black primer. I applied the paint in bold layers with a palette knife, building up volume and texture. The technique resembles a mosaic of brushstrokes, creating an effect of shimmering greenery and cool water. The work is highly textured and deeply relief-like; I literally sculpted it out of paint. The painting has not been varnished.
