Story

I simply love peonies — I could paint them all the time. What magnificent flowers, and yet how fleeting their lives are. In this painting I wanted to capture, preserve, and unravel their beauty; but the eye glides over them so quickly that catching every detail is simply impossible. Highlights define the placement and shape of each blossom, while the background is inseparable from the bouquet — together they form one unified whole.

Artistry

I painted this alla prima on canvas mounted on a rigid panel, covering the entire surface first with a base layer built from the cool tones of the final composition. The painting has not been varnished.
